Senior Director of Research Programs & Strategy

The Data Science Institute (DSI) is seeking a highly experienced Senior Director for Research Programs & Strategy to lead the DSI’s research and evaluation efforts. The Senior Director is responsible for the strategic management of research initiatives and external and internal research partnerships that support DSI’s activities. The Senior Director for Research Programs & Strategy reports directly to the Executive Director. The Senior Director for Research Programs & Strategy will work collaboratively with the DSI Faculty Director of Research and Faculty Director of AI to sharpen the DSI’s research vision and build strong relationships with scholars, scientists and faculty/staff and to grow the DSI’s research portfolio. The Senior Director will build relationships with agencies and organizations to support research strategy. This includes high-level relationship building, research project development and management, financial and grant management, and program and donor development. The Senior Director will translate academic research into policy and implementation recommendations. The Senior Director will oversee a group of research professionals who are responsible for targeted research and programmatic activities and work with the team to sustain, implement, and disseminate research.

Staff Data Scientist

Working in collaboration with UChicago Data Science Institute faculty and staff and The Schmidt Family Foundation 11th Hour Project (“11th Hour”), the Data Scientist will increase the data capacity of 11th Hour program staff and grantees. This role will consult on 11th Hour grantee data collection and modeling as well as the long-range goals of advancing scientific discovery, developing open source resources, innovative technical consulting, development and delivery of workshops and training, and other activities designed to advance the research and practice of data-driven and data intensive discovery across 11th Hour grantee areas.

Writer, Senior Analyst

The Writer produces content that supports the Data Science Institute’s strategic goals and mission, and enhances the university’s brand, reputation, and identity as a leading academic and research institution. This position writes a variety of communications for the Data Science Institute (DSI) and affiliated faculty, programs, and students. The Writer will report to the Chief of Staff and produces news stories, feature articles, web content, social media posts, and other print and online marketing and communications. Works with moderate guidance to research, compose, and edit high-level communications, publications and/or reports with complex and specialized subject matter.

Research Program Coordinator

The Research Program Coordinator will be administratively based at the AI for Climate Initiative (AICE), a program of the Data Science Institute (DSI) and the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth and aims to accelerate and transform climate research with a focus on both scientific advances and societal impacts. It combines the staggering innovations in AI and the rapid increase of data availability with fundamental domain knowledge to significantly improve prediction capabilities and understanding of climate physics, develop quantitative models for climate change’s socioeconomic impacts, and create new climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. AICE has developed a partnership with the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence to transform the state of the art of human-centered AI weather forecasting and design a training curriculum for government officials from around the world to learn how to benefit from this ongoing revolution in weather forecasting.
