DSI Communications Office Hours
The DSI Communications team is available weekly to help faculty, affiliated researchers, postdocs, Fellows, and students develop and promote their research, accomplishments, and work to DSI’s audiences and beyond.
Office hours are held every other week on rotating days (Wednesdays & Thursdays) each month, with each office hours session running up to two hours with 15-minute meeting segments participants can sign up for. Drop by in person on the second floor of the DSI building (5460 S University Ave, Room 245), or sign up in advance to meet with us in DSI or join via Zoom.
What we offer
We can write articles for the DSI website, create and promote social media content, edit blog posts and research summaries, develop promotional graphics, coordinate event coverage, and produce video and multimedia content. We’re also happy to serve as thought partners to explore communications opportunities—including connections to other UChicago departments and partners.
What we can promote
Bring us your peer-reviewed publications, grants and awards, media coverage, upcoming talks or presentations, and professional milestones.
How to get started
Walk-ins are welcome, but we encourage using our sign-up form to reserve a 15-minute slot (or as many as you need) and share a preview of your request so we can come prepared. A Zoom option is available for those who sign up in advance.

Benjamin Stemen (he/him)

Casey serves as a scientific writer at the Data Science Institute to support the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Ai in Science Fellowship and Prof. Willett’s research portfolio. Before joining DSI, Casey served as a technical writer/editor for the USDA’s Economic Research Service, the Department’s principal social science research agency. She has diverse writing, researching, teaching, and editing experience across academic, private, and government sectors. She began her writing career as a writing tutor in 2011 at Creighton University and taught Rhetoric & Composition (rhet/comp), technical writing, and research writing at the University of Kansas. Casey earned her BA (2013) in rhet/comp at Creighton University and PhD (2020) in rhet/comp at the University of Kansas. She specializes in public rhetorics, writing pedagogies, composition studies, and research- and science-based editing. In her free time, she enjoys going on lake walks, baking, and goofing around with her spouse and their three cats.
Benjamin Stemen is the Social and Digital Media Specialist at the Data Science Institute. Benjamin has prior experience developing multimedia content for governments, school districts, nonprofits, and Indiana University. At Indiana University Research, Benjamin took charge of the University’s partnership with the Associated Press to increase the reach of media highlighting faculty expertise and research. Benjamin is committed to delivering innovative media solutions to promote the Data Science Institute, National Institute for Theory and Mathematics in Biology, associated faculty, and the exciting work conducted by University of Chicago faculty.
