Undergraduate Mentor Opportunity
OVERVIEW:
The Data Science Institute (DSI) is seeking current UChicago undergraduate students to serve as Undergraduate Mentors for the fall Data4All High School Bridge Workshop. The workshop aims to provide high school students from the Chicagoland area with an introduction to data science skills and concepts. The undergraduate mentors provide instruction for the high school students as they work through data science case studies using Jupyter Notebooks, and help facilitate discussions within small groups (5-6 students each). Benefits of the position include competitive compensation, mentoring experience, networking within the UChicago and Argonne National Laboratory data science ecosystems, and working as part of a team to help broaden participation in data science and computing. Lunch will be provided each week.
DATES/TIMES: March 25th– May 13th, 10:30am-2:30pm, weekly on Saturdays for 8 weeks.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Applicant must be a current, registered UChicago undergraduate student.
- Applicant must have U.S. work authorization.
- Applicant’s campus work hours, including the potential Data4All instructor position, must not exceed 20 hours total per week.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead small group instruction and facilitation, with 5-6 students per small group. Lessons include working through exercises with students on Jupyter Notebooks, introducing data science and programming skills and concepts, and facilitating group conversations about computing and data science.
- Serve as a technical resource for students. Address and answer questions in small group sessions.
- Help students develop final presentations on the data science research lifecycle.
TIME COMMITMENT:
- Workshop dates: March 25th – May 13th, 10:30am-2:30pm, weekly on Saturdays for 8 weeks (30 minutes before and after each session to help set up and break down each week).
- Weekly team meeting: 30-45 min, date/time TBD, beginning the week of March 20th through the week of May 8th; ad hoc meetings will be added as needed on a limited basis.
- 2-3 hours required training in advance of the program, including working with minors training and trauma-informed facilitation training.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated interest in mentoring and advising students. Teaching/TA or outreach experience strongly preferred.
- Interest in and commitment to broadening participation in computing and data science.
- Background in computer science, statistics, or data science. Research experience in data science, machine learning, or AI preferred.
- Skills: Python, Jupyter Notebooks, data visualization, data analysis.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and community-building skills.
FORMAT & COVID-19 GUIDELINES:
The workshop will be held in person, with no remote options for engagement. All participants, including workshop staff and high school students, are required to follow all UChicago and UChicago Medicine guidelines regarding COVID-19. We will require that all high school students mask during the workshop except when eating during lunch. Masks and hand sanitizer will be provided.
COMPENSATION: $2,000
Please note: this total is before tax withholding. Payments will be paid through Workday, and paid out in multiple, equal installments on the University’s biweekly payroll schedule.
