Title: AI-Accelerated Climate Science and Prediction

Abstract: While climate change is certain, precisely how climate will change is less clear. But breakthroughs in the accuracy of climate projections and in the quantification of their uncertainties are now within reach, thanks to advances in the computational and data sciences and in the availability of Earth observations from space and from the ground. I will survey the design of a new Earth system model (ESM), developed by the Climate Modeling Alliance (CliMA), which is performance-portable across modern computing architectures. The talk will cover key new concepts and results, including how data assimilation (DA) and machine learning (ML) can inform physics-based models with heterogeneous and noisy data and how substantial increases in the accuracy of simulations of uncertain processes can be achieved.

Bio: Tapio Schneider, Theodore Y. Wu Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering, Caltech. Tapio is a Professor at Caltech specializing in climate research and mentoring the next generation of scientists to become leaders in this field. His research has contributed to understanding how rainfall extremes change with global warming, how changes in cloud cover can affect climate stability, and how atmospheric dynamics on planetary bodies such as Earth, Jupiter, and Titan operate. He is leading the Climate Modeling Alliance (CliMA), a multi-institutional consortium of scientists, applied mathematicians, and software engineers united in the goal of developing the first climate model that learns directly from Earth observations and other data. This model aims to provide accurate climate predictions to assist in mitigating and adapting to future climate changes.
