DSI hosts third annual AI+Science Summer School
The third annual AI+Science Summer School welcomed 174 researchers, grad students, and industry practitioners from 76 institutions across the globe to UChicago. Co-hosted by the Data Science Institute (DSI), the Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation (IMSI) at UChicago, and Schmidt Sciences via the Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Fellowship program, the event was held July 15 – 19. The program introduced a new generation of diverse interdisciplinary graduate students and researchers to the emerging field of AI + Science, building a community and spurring new research directions focused on AI-enabled scientific discovery across the physical and biological sciences.
This year’s speakers and interactive sessions focused on applications of AI and Machine learning in core areas of domain science – genetics and physics, materials and chemistry, energy sciences, climate sciences and bioinformatics. Featured speakers included:
Nhan Tran (Fermilab)
“Fast” ML for Science
Zachary Ulissi (CMU/Facebook-Meta)
Large Datasets in Chemistry & Challenges/Approaches to Uncertainty Quantification
Suganya Sivagurunathan (Merkin Institute)
Introduction to Morphological Profiling and exploring the profiles using Morpheus
Srijit Seal (Merkin Institute)
Fundamentals of Predictive Modeling of Small Molecule Properties
Muratahan Aykol (Google DeepMind)
How machine learning algorithms can be used in a closed-loop setting to accelerate materials research by recasting research problems as optimization tasks.
Daniel Schwalbe-Koda (UCLA)
Robustness and Uncertainty Quantification for Scientific Machine Learning
Pedram Hassanzadeh (UChicago)
AI and the 2nd Revolution in Weather and Climate Prediction
Chihway Chang (UChicago)
AI + Cosmology
Tess Smidt (MIT)
A Primer on 3D Euclidean Neural Networks
Mit Kotak/Tuong Phung (MIT)
Symphony-Equivariant Point-Centered Spherical Harmonics for 3D Molecule Generation
The 2024 AI + Science Summer School organizing committee included Peter Lu, Ritesh Kumar, Yihang Wang, Anthony Badea, Mark Schulze, Simona Ahmed, and Rebecca Willett. Plans are underway for the 2025 AI+Science Summer School to take place next July at the UChicago Paris campus. Stay tuned!
