Starting in Autumn 2026, students interested in the in-person MS in Applied Data Science program at the University of Chicago will have the option to pursue a new 2-Year Thesis Track. This option is designed for those who want more time to explore the field of data science, take additional electives, and complete both a capstone and a thesis project. Applications open in September 2025, giving prospective students the opportunity to apply early for this expanded academic experience.

The new track includes 18 courses over six academic quarters. Students will complete six core courses, eight electives, two capstone project courses, and two independent study courses supporting the thesis. Three electives are exclusive to the 2-Year Thesis Track: Introduction to Quantum Computing, Advanced AI Architecture & Solutions, and Human-Computer Interaction. These courses allow students to explore emerging areas shaping the future of data science.

Unlike the standard 12-course program, which will continue to be offered, this longer track provides additional time to dive deeper into specialized topics and pursue both collaborative and independent research. The thesis component allows students to work closely with faculty on a research topic that often builds on their capstone experience. This opportunity is especially valuable for those interested in research-driven or innovation-focused roles.

Students in the 2-Year Thesis Track will be based at the NBC Tower in downtown Chicago, a city known for its vibrant tech and business landscape. The location offers access to a wide range of networking events, internship opportunities, and industry connections that enrich the student experience both inside and outside the classroom.

With more time in the program, students can also form stronger connections with their peers, faculty, and staff. The extended format supports meaningful collaboration, community-building, and participation in live classes, data science seminars, and career development workshops. Dedicated career support and industry engagement remain central to the student experience throughout the program.

“The Thesis option gives students time to develop deeper and more fully as professionals in the Data Science field, whether through deeper research projects on an area of passion, through additional coursework, or through stronger connections and networks within the community of Data Scientists within the DSI,” said Greg Green, Director of the MS in Applied Data Science program.

Applications for the 2-Year Thesis Track open in September 2025, with the first cohort beginning in Autumn 2026. The application deadline for this track is November 6, 2025. Whether you’re looking to deepen your expertise, shift into a data science role, or take a more research-focused academic path, this new option offers the time, community, and support to help you reach your goals.
