DSI leadership has deep roots in both industry and academia: leadership have been involved in founding breakthrough companies in the AI and Data Science space and have engaged with over 200 companies to drive innovation, research, and education in data science, machine learning, and data analytics.

Michael J. Franklin, Morton D. Hull Distinguished Service Professor; Senior Advisor to the Provost for Computing and Data Science; Faculty Co-Director, Data Science Institute

Professor Franklin co-founded Berkeley’s AMPLab, created industry-changing open source Big Data software including Apache Spark, and served as a Founding Advisor at DataBricks. An authority on databases, data analytics, data management, and distributed systems, he is also an energetic entrepreneur, founding and becoming chief technology officer of Truviso, a data analytics company acquired by Cisco Systems. He serves on the technical advisory boards of various data-driven technology companies and organizations.

 

Dan Nicolae, Distinguished Service Professor in the Departments of Statistics, Human Genetics, Medicine, and the College

Professor Nicolae’s research focuses on developing statistical and computational methods for understanding human genetic variation and its influence on the risk for complex traits. His research centers on data integration and system-level approaches using large datasets with far-reaching implications for driving innovation to improve research practices, patient outcomes and more.

 

 

Associated Program Leadership:

David Uminsky, Executive Director, Data Science Institute; Senior Research Associate, Department of Computer Science

Dr. Uminsky joined the University of Chicago in September 2020. Prior to UChicago, he was Executive Director of the Data Institute and an Associate Professor of Mathematics at University of San Francisco (USF). His research interests are in machine learning, signal processing, pattern formation, and dynamical systems. He is also an associate editor of the Harvard Data Science Review.

 

Greg Green, Senior Instructional Professor; Senior Director of the DSI Polsky Transform Initiative; Senior Director of DSI Executive and Professional Education

Throughout his career, Dr. Green has used his expertise in digital strategies, business analytics, and new product development to drive rapid revenue growth and business transformation. His industry roles include Chief Analytics Officer at Harland Clarke Holdings, Director at Google, EVP/Managing Director at Publicis Groupe, and Analytics Practice Lead at PwC. Dr. Green’s patented cloud-based media analytics platform was highlighted in Harvard Business Review and Fast Company.

 

Arnab Bose, Associate Senior Instructional Professor, Program Director of MS in Applied Data Science Online Program; Chief Scientific Officer, UST AlphaAI

Dr. Bose has over two and a half decades of industry experience and enjoys working with data to influence behavioral outcomes. As an entrepreneur, he had a startup focused on applications of AI in healthcare, finance, semiconductor, and retail that he successfully exited post-acquisition. He is the Chief Scientific Officer at UST AlphaAI and an advisor to AI companies.

 

Nick Ross, Data Science Clinic Director, Data Science Institute; Associate Senior Instructional Professor

Dr. Ross is an experienced data science executive and academic leader who specializes in leveraging business, engineering, and data to optimize decision-making. His various roles have ranged from architecting and designing production ML/AI systems, to hiring, growing, and leading engineering and data science teams.
