Arna Woemmel joined the Data Science Institute in October 2025, where she works with Raul Castro Fernandez on the Data Ecology Initiative. She is interested in the economics of data, particularly how data shapes and derives value from human decision-making. Arna completed her PhD in Economics at the University of Hamburg, Germany, where she was advised by Gerd Muehlheusser (Economics) and Judith Simon (Ethics in IT). During her PhD, she was a fellow of the German Research Foundation as a member of the graduate program in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. She spent research visits at Columbia University’s Data Science Institute, Columbia Law School, and ETH Zurich. Her PhD work on public attitude formation toward AI received a Best Paper Award from the American Law and Economics Association in 2023 and the Theodore Eisenberg Prize at the Conference on Empirical Legal Studies in 2024. She holds a BSc in Economics from the University of Bayreuth and an MSc in Business Economics from Humboldt University of Berlin. Prior to her graduate studies, Arna worked in consulting.
