Carlos joined DSI as a postdoctoral scholar in 2025, having previously held a fellowship with the Chicago Center for Theoretical Chemistry.  His research applies concepts and methods from machine learning to understand how complex processes in cell biology produce emergent forms of decision-making and dynamical control.  Before coming to UChicago, where he works with Profs. Suriyanarayanan Vaikuntanathan and Aaron Dinner, he obtained a Ph.D. in Biophysics from the University of Maryland where he worked with Profs. Garegin Papoian and Christopher Jarzynski.
