Winter 2024 Fellows

Raúl Castellanos holds a Joint Degree in International Relations and Political Science from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) and is pursuing an MS in Computational Analysis and Public Policy (MSCAPP) at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy. With professional experiences ranging from serving as the Open Data Deputy Director for the Public Agency of Digital Innovation (ADIP) in Mexico City to contributing as a Data Analyst for Powered by People, Raúl demonstrates expertise in data analysis, cost-effective strategies, and project leadership.

Jonathan Juarez is currently a second-year master’s degree student in the Computational Analysis and Public Policy (CAPP) program at the Harris School of Public Policy. After earning his B.S. in Political Science and Economics from Texas A&M University, he spent five years working as a data analyst and database engineer in Texas. Today, Jonathan is dedicated to using his expertise to address challenges faced by individuals facing discrimination, poverty, and those in marginalized communities.

Josemaria is a research assistant for the Community Data Fellows program at the Data Science Institute. He received his bachelor’s degree in Political Science at ITAM (Mexico) and he is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Computational Analysis and Public Policy at the University of Chicago. Prior to studying at the University, he was a product manager at Mexico City’s Government (ADIP). He also worked as an analyst at IMCO, a Mexican policy think tank.

Hieu completed his undergraduate studies in Quantitative Economics and Mathematics from Dickinson College, and he is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Computational Analysis and Public Policy at the University of Chicago. Before UChicago, Hieu worked on database engineering and program evaluation at Save the Children International in Vietnam and contributed to efficient operational and analysis workflows. His strengths include database management and data analysis.

Manuel completed his Bachelor’s degree in Economics and pursued a Master’s in Applied Statistics at the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Currently, he is a Master’s student in Computational Analysis and Public Policy at the Harris School of Public Policy. His professional journey has spanned across diverse sectors, including the private sector with Philip Morris International, contributing to education policy initiatives at EDUCA, an education policy think tank/NGO, and serving as an advisor to a congressman in the Dominican Republic. Manuel’s main interests lie in the intersection of policy and data science, where he is passionate about how data analysis can inform and transform policy decisions for the better.

Daniel is a proud first-generation college student from Munich, Germany. He completed his undergraduate studies in Economics and Data Analytics at the University of Cincinnati and worked at the University of Chicago’s Energy and Environment Lab over the last year. In the near future, Daniel hopes to pursue a Ph.D. in Biostatistics, researching causal inference tools for dependent data.

Santiago holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Economics from Universidad Externado (Colombia). He is a second-year graduate student of the Master’s in Computational Analysis and Public Policy (MSCAPP) at the University of Chicago. He worked at the Financial Stability Division at the Central Bank of Colombia, where he conducted data analysis, research, and policy recommendations focused on Colombia’s financial system. He has been a Data Science for All (DS4A) Fellow, an Imago Global Grassroots Fellow, and a Community Data Fellow at the Data Science Institute at the University of Chicago. Santiago is interested in designing, implementing, and analyzing policies and programs while leveraging quantitative, qualitative, and data science methods that could help organizations scale up their impact and improve people’s livelihoods.

Athmika is currently pursuing a Masters of Public Policy degree at the Harris School of Public Policy. She is interested in studying and employing both quantitative and qualitative methods to critically analyze how policy impacts communities. Before starting at UChicago, Athmika worked as a Software Engineer in Boston.

Summer 2023 Fellows

Tiger is currently a rising 2nd-year student at University of Chicago Master Program of Computer Science. He is interning with the Data Science institute as a Community Data Fellow over this Summer. He’s worked on the Reveal News project, which included developing a full-stack web application using Django, React for building frontend and backend application, and deployment using AWS Cloud Service. Tiger graduated from the University of Washington in the Summer of 2021 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics. As a mechanical engineering student, he has trained in the area of Embedded Computing in Mechanical Systems and has the professional skill to develop a thorough Finite Element Analysis. Right now, his study focuses on building and designing software applications and computer systems. His areas of interest are software engineering and full-stack application development.

She is eager to collaborate with organizations who are doing incredible work in their communities. As a Community Data Fellow, Diamon supported Chicago Public Libraries and Plan4Success, a program focused on college and career readiness for underserved youth.

Soham is a second year Master’s Program in Computer Science (MPCS) student at University of Chicago and interning with the Data Science Institute as a Community Data Fellow over the summer. He worked on the Reveal News project for building web application using React, Django and AWS. Soham has 3+ years of professional experience working as a software engineer with Epsilon and GE Digital after his undergraduate studies. He’s an AWS Certified Developer Associate and has worked as a Teaching Assistant for the Cloud Computing MPCS course with the CS Department of UChicago for Winter and Spring 2023 quarters. He’s pursuing the High-Performance Computing (HPC) specialization and his areas of interest are software engineering, full-stack web development, high-performance computing, and machine learning.

Qingyi is a Master of Public Policy student at the University of Chicago, focusing on Data Analytics. As a Community Data Fellow at the Data Science Institute, Qingyi worked with the Open Spatial Lab to develop a data collaboration tool, aiming to provide low-code and no-code geospatial data tools for non-profit organizations. Additionally, Qingyi worked with the Chicago Public Library to identify user demographics and assists Praize Productions in evaluating their impact. With a strong background in data analysis and a commitment to social impact, Qingyi brings a comprehensive skill set to drive data-driven solutions in the public policy realm.

Sai is a second-year graduate student in the MS in Applied Data Science program. He did his undergrad in Electronics and Communication Engineering and he has ~1.5 years of experience in Supply Chain, Logistics and Operations. As a Community Data Fellow, Sai worked on a project for Climate Cabinet and building interactive maps for the client. These maps serve as a tool to identify the areas where IRA (Inflation Reduction Act) tax credits can be maximized and better serve disadvantaged communities. He is also worked on an annotation project for mBio which will be used as the training data later for building a supervised machine learning model.

As a Community Data Fellow, Ming-Chieh (Eddie) was involved in the Greenwave project, focusing on developing machine learning solutions for image processing that enable accurate and efficient analysis for ecological monitoring and contribute to a sustainable future.

He has experience in machine learning and data analysis, and has started learning to program first in the context of data science. As a Community Data Fellow, Varun worked with GRAIN to build a database of land deals related to carbon farming.

Prior to coming to Chicago, she worked with the Asian Development Bank in Manila Philippines, and had analytics experience in the private sector as well. As a Community Data Fellow, she worked on the Illinois Commission on Equity and Inclusion and Praize Production, Inc. projects. She is passionate on the intersection of data, technology, and policy.

She is passionate about strengthening social service delivery in developing countries through strategic decision-making tools like robust data structures and monitoring and evaluation systems. Sanya graduated from University of Delhi with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Mathematics and has worked on evaluation of social protection programs in India and Africa.
